Comments: Bump, this is the first time you've posted without talking about your "poor memory", but it seems you have the best memory of anyone. I sure remember Ma and Pa Kettle, Roy Rogers, and the Lone Ranger movies, and the newsreels which were often about the world wars and the military. Nowadays a couple and their 2 kids can blow through $100 just going to a movie.

Comments: I spent lots of times in the theatre. Many a Sat. matinee. ...Like you say. ...I cannot exactly say what the admission price. I thought five cents. Then a nickel for a double ppopcicle. probably the same for a box of popcorn. Most of the goodies were gone before the movie began. We used the popcorn boxes to make play binoculars. The popcicles we would gather five sticks and make flying saucers to toss around until they exploded. ....Sometimes it was a long wait(for us little brats) before we would eventually stand up for O'Canada. ..Then lights dimmed and the curtain was drawn. ...Then Rosie the Riveter and the talking song ball would bounce across the screen. ...Then some very early animated black and white cartoon. ..Then an advert for local business. Then on with the show. Chuckle. I learned my craft and was forever more a Cowboy hero Junky. ...Old Westerns still make up a large part of my TV. ...Sometimes the feature was an Randolph Scott 'oater' or Roy Rodgers, Gene Autry and so on. ...Not in the least was Ma and Pa Kettle. ......My mum was a movie screen nut. I got to see many movies in that theatre. The theatre in Brandon as well. Myself and friends were quite PO'd when pop went up to 7 cents or that for a bottle. ...Wasn't the barber shop right next door?
Comments: Does anybody else remember going to the THEATRE in the REC BUILDING? I could be wrong about this but I think the admission price back in the early 60's was TEN CENTS .... and, for that price, you got a couple of cartoons, a "serial" (always a Western and always a "cliffhanger" (sometimes literally!!) at the end, and then the Feature Movie.
I am pretty sure my Dad used to give me 25 cents and I would go for the afternoon. I had these big mittens that my Mom knit .... no "idiot strings" fortunately ... but I remember I would fill both mittens up with candy .... eat it all through the show and still come home with at least one mitten full!!
Great memories from a great childhood .... anybody else care to weigh in on going to the movies??

Comments: Howdy Guys, My memory may be failing me. ...Here goes. ...As kids we did spend many days in summer at Minnedosa. Well we do time in Neepawa as well and also Wawaneesa. It certainly was an improvement over the gravel, pit in Douglas. ...In Minnedosa we camped over night. A very large old tan coloured canvas tent with a tall centre pole in the middle and a canvas cover which was suspended by two long poles. It covered us and kept the door opening dry, which My Mum was forever thankful. ..We played and wore ourselves out with all the swimming and activity. We made our way back dutifully for every meal like it was programmed in our brain. ....I believe there was a Dam for the lake and it emptied into the river very near the campsite and the beach. We as kids would walk across the narrow path or the walk which was on the Dam. Then we were on the other side of the river. Then make our way down below the Dam and now along the River. Then we did our fishing. ...I think then the river made its way down and around a westward bend thru the Town of Minnedosa. ....Is that right. ....I remember that sometimes that swimmers would get more than they bargained for when too close to the dam or in fast water below the dam. I saw more than one person in a panic situation and desperately trying to swim to shore and 'kiss' the terra firma. ....All of my brothers and sisters would remember Minnedosa. Food and the play and outdoor sleeping somehow always seemed magical in tent at Minnedosa. I hope my memory serves me correctly.

Comments: Howdy, My lovely wife and myself are just now relaxing after an enjoyable week of R&R at a beach WharfHouse directly across the narrows in Discovery Passage from our home. .....A short ferry ride. ...Ourselves and good company and our doggy poo. Oldest son here the last three days. Lots of fun. bump.
Comments: We've had remarkably good weather here in the "Peg this summer (24 - 30 degrees), and making lots of use of the pool - kids, grandkids, in-laws, friends and their kids in, a couple of times a week. The little ones are getting more confident in the water. Then we barbecue and have some beverages. But the wasps are bad, Bobby sprayed a couple of times. Always the pessimist, once July is over, I start thinking about kids returning to school, then stores put the Hallowe'en stuff out, and before you know it the Christmas music is playing. Live for the moment, I guess. Keep the party going!
Comments: Hope every one is enjoying their summer and being Safe. Cheers Turk

Comments: Howdy Phyliss, I left Shilo in summer of '60. I believe. I was in school in Sept. 1961 in a one room schoolhouse outside Spryfield(outskirts of Halifax). The Navy PMQ''s were out there. My Dad loved the Leblan Park Legion in the Park. Right on the way home. ...So I would have been 11/12 years in those days. As I mentioned we were one of first in PMQ' (Base Housing Married Quarters. We were at #7 Ubique for a long time. I am sure Rod was a friend of ours. One afternoon near supper time one of our friends and I am sure he lived in your side of duplex, came a barrelling down the back of your yard onto the road or sidewalk or whatever on his bike racing the rest of us young boys. He hit an object or mis-braked or some sort of mech failure ocurred and he promptly went head over heels over handle bars of his glider type bike. He did himself an injury pretty good there in the southern half of his body. He did survive but had to ride it out. Excuse the pun. Gliders were the new bike style. No more fix 'me up junkers, for us anymore. They were probably the choice Xmas present of the year for all of us. All new 3speed gears. Red and white colour with two tone red and white seats. Oh boy! Chuckle. Remember the Mums wearing veils when they got all dollied up to go to town or Church or to an evening out at the Camp Clubs. Hank Williams and Ermest Tubb. Ricky Nelson and Fats Domino. Bud Abbot and Lou Costello. Milton Berle and Jack Benny (Oh Rochester!) Roy Rogers, Cisco Kid, Gene Autrey, Lone Ranger and Tonto, and Tex Ritter. .....Andy and Barney and Opie and Aunt Bee. Phyliss: Looking out from your place on Royal and to the left across the street there should have been an empty space or lot that made the corner turning right on Ubique.
Comments: Hi Karen and Bump Yes we did live on Royal when the Holmes were there. I remember all those people (or almost all) that you are mentioning. My maiden name is Dafoe --went back to it after Tony Findlay passed away. I have 2 younger brothers, Rod and Bryon -- you probably are talking about Rod -- he would have been 11 or 12 then. My other brother was just 2 at that time. Amazing -- old memories never go away --- I still dream as if I am back in Shilo. Bet a lot of Shilobrats do!
