I lived on Larkhill in the early 50’s. My Dad was RSM Jack Stevens and mom was Eva. My sister Lesly and I were 5 and 10 when we moved there. I have fond memories of the Celli family and the Goertzen’s who lived on our street.

Bump: I remember those inkwells and the hole in the desk to hold them. Blotters were an absolute necessity, especially for fumblers like me. I treated my first ballpoint like gold because they were not cheap. They sold for over $12 when first produced. Now, good ones, are given away by my physio as advertising. I have more than a few with his name and address on them.

Edie, I would like to see that card just to admire the penmanship. In my condition, my signature changes every 5 minutes or so!

Hi Edie. ...I cannot recall putting my sign on a School library book. in Camp Shilo. I did however learn to write my ‘letters’ in lined notebooks at my desk which had been constructed with a very neat hole on top right side I believe (I was a lefty). In the beginning of an early school year we were introduced to the wonders of the inkwell/blue ink and a nib pen. ...Saw my first very messy fountain pen. Soon after I saw my first ball point pen on sale in the Canteen/Post office over by the Sports Palace. They were PaperMate * * * ...When I left High School in Bedford NS I went into RCAF and eventually in ‘67 was on site in Fire Hall at CFB Comox BC. Well by that time all Fire Halls had Color TV’s as standard issue although they had no NATO numbers. We paid for them via the Fire Crew canteen fund. ....Then on my color tv commercials appeared and lo and behold in lovely color was a young Bobby Orr on ice in his Boston Colors doing a slap shot. His hockey stick had a hole in middle of the blade and a ‘ newfangled’ bic pen was attached and he was spouting about how great bic * * * were. They would last forever. Chuckle. Another tiny bit of trivia. I often wonder if his bic commercial was the inspiration for the ‘ Everready Bunny’ clapping that cymbal.

I thought this bit of trivia might be interesting to some of you (Doug Jordan, I’ll certainly have to take a photo of this library card and add it to my 60’s trivia). In cleaning out my book collection today (there comes a time to start ridding oneself of the accumulation of years and hopefully while one still has the strength to accomplish the task) I chanced to open the pages of an old book entitled ‘The Wider Heart’ only to see PROPERTY OF SHILO S.D. 2316 inscribed on the inside cover. Attached to the back cover was that small cream envelope with a signature card inside of it. I slid the card out and read the names: Joanne Cheverie, Barbara Houston, Marna Elliot, Bev Whitchurch, Heather Coleman, S. Hoyland, Donna Thompson, Vicky Clark, Gwen Marquis, Nancy Robertson, Sandra Nichol, Pat Laverty, C. Rowland, L. Forke, Nancy Robertson (she must have liked the story), Barb Gork and Pauline McMullen. My signature is not on the card so how did it come to be in my possession? Maybe they had a book sale at school and I bought it ?? The dates of the signatures are October 28, 1965 - September 13, 1966. So there you are, a little trip down memory lane. A side-note, some of the signatures are really lovely; such a pity they don’t teach cursive in school anymore. :!cry:

Well Bill G, not just sure what you are correcting me on but we moved into a Q in Fort Henry Heights in 1954 and there were many Q's at that time. Did your family not move into one, when they came available.?

Hello Bill Brown--you old turkey! ( I mean that with affection, of course-just like Al Russel-another old turkey!)

Anyway, your notes about a Kingston Mini-Reunion always invoke early childhood memories--why??

Well, to make a long story short-my Dad's 35 year career with the Engineers (RCE) resulted in us (me- 2 years old + my 3 older brothers) residing on the shores of Lake Ontario (King Henry Heights-right?)-Nope-next door to the old Kingston Pen (fond early memories!)-at the intersection of now Kingston Street West & Alwington Place-where the Isabel Bader Centre (Queens University) now resides.

What? Well, when we lived there (1952-1959), there were about 3 or 4 H-Huts where we resided & some RCE shops and admin offices. Why? I have no idea-but my Dad was the head honcho, and they were doing Army maintenance activities in the Kingston area. Also, there was a beautiful Officers Mess on the lakeshore there with huge front windows & lawns-looking toward Wolfe Island.

Some of my earliest childhood memories are of the old lake freight ships passing by close to the shore.

Also, the Guards at the Kingston Pen. would throw candies over the huge fence to us little tykes waving to them!

I would love to cruise by that location and hoist a glass to those memories. (btw-the only other surnames from that time that I remember living at that location are "Pope" and "Malone".
